TULSA Information on the importance of early diagnosis of low vision and regular eye exams will be available at the opening of The Eye Site, the National Eye Institutes traveling exhibit on low vision.
A grand opening celebration is schedule for 1 p.m. at Promenade Mall on Saturday, Feb. 17. The event is sponsored by the Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry and the Dean A. McGee Eye Institute at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.
NSU Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Dalton Bigbee, NSUOCO Dean Dr. George Foster, and NSUOCO Dr. Linda Edmondson will discuss the importance of low vision screenings and regular eye care.
The National Eye Institute developed The Eye Site for its Low Vision Education Program, which is designed to help people understand what low vision is and explain what steps they can take to stay independent despite vision loss.
The Eye Site features five kiosks with an interactive multimedia touch screen program, a display of assistive devices, and a list of local low vision resources.
In addition, local musician and NSU student T.J. Spears will provide entertainment prior to the opening. Spears is recognized as a performer at NSUs Downtown Country, and participates in an annual talent contest to raise money for Oklahoma Production Center in Tahlequah. He has received numerous awards, including being named the 2005 runner-up in the KOTV Channel 6 Gimme The Mic contest, and among the top five finalists at the 2006 Branson Idol.
The Eye Site will remain at Tulsa Promenade through Thursday, March 15 before moving to other locations in Oklahoma, including the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City, and Central Mall in Lawton.
NSUOCO is Oklahomas only college of optometry and one of 17 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
