NSU Nutritional Sciences students to lead guided Reasor’s tours

(Tahlequah, Okla.)--Students, staff, and faculty members participating in Northeastern State Universitys Health and Wellness Initiative are benefitting from a Wellness Points Program provided by NSUs Student Health Services (SHS) department. And now, thanks to NSU Nutritional Sciences Program Chair, Cassandra Crawford Ciglar and her students, the Tahlequah community can benefit as well.
Each week, participants of the eight-week program are encouraged to participate in an activity to earn points. Starting the week of Feb. 6, Crawford Ciglar has made her students available to give free, weekly, guided grocery store tours, highlighting tips for Healthy Shopping on a Budget.
My Nutritional Sciences students will be providing grocery store tours at Reasor's in Tahlequah, where they will be helping to expand knowledge of healthy foods, assist individuals in being able to identify healthy ingredients, teach people how to read nutritional labels and give insight on basic pantry needs on a budget and recipe ideas, Crawford Ciglar said.
Tours will take place everyFridayin February from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with tours lasting 30-minutes to one hour. Tours will also take place everyFridayin April at the same time.
The guided tours will be available to those participating in the NSU Wellness Points Program; however, participants in Tons off Tahlequah, as well as community members are also encouraged to take advantage of the tours.
These events are practical application for my third and fourth year students. Its a way for them to get hands-on training as well as participate in community service, where they're getting real-world experience before theyve even started their internships, Crawford Ciglar said.
It also allows for us to give back to the community that were in and to promote health and wellness to the Tahlequah community. We hope to get as many people to take advantage of the tours as possible.
