(Tahlequah, Oklahoma)--Northeastern State Universitys Sequoyah Institute opens their 2016-2017 Performing Arts Series with musical, political theatre by The Capitol Steps. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the NSU Center for the Performing Arts.
The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. The group, based in our nations capital, dig into the headlines of the day to create parodies and skits that convey a special brand of satirical humor. Many of the cast members have worked for politicians, some for democrats, some for republicans and some for politicians who firmly straddle the fence.
The news is saturated with information on the upcoming Presidential election and many serious issues. The Capitol Steps provide a night off. It is a chance for us to all come togetherrepublicans, democrats, and independents - and enjoy a night where we can laugh at ourselves, Cindy Chanslor, coordinator at the Sequoyah Institute, said.
Since The Capitol Steps creation in 1981, the group has recorded over 30 albums and has been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, as well as being continual favorite on National Public Radio. The Capitol Steps will perform from their recent album, What to Expect when Youre Electing, along with new material from the campaign trail.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Shannon Bridgmon, associate professor of Political Science and Dr. Phillip Bridgmon, professor and dean of Liberal Arts, will present Politics is a Spectator Sport, a lecture sharing how humor has been used to discuss political issues since the United States became a nation. The lecture will take place at 3 p.m. in the NSU Jazz Lab and is free and open to the public.
Tickets for the evening performance can be purchased online at www.nsuok.edu/si, by phone at 918-458-2075 or in person Monday through Friday at the Sequoyah Institute Box Office located at 529 Seminary Ave. Tickets will also be available at the Center for the Performing Arts Box Office beginning one hour prior to show time.
