(Tahlequah, Oklahoma)--On Aug. 16, Northeastern State University Athletics honored the legacy of Dr. Jack Dobbins, former NSU basketball coach, with a private luncheon and portrait dedication in the Tahlequah Event Center.
Earlier this year, before a basketball double header on Feb. 27, NSU Athletics and the NSU Foundation joined friends, donors and fans to celebrate the more than three decades invested in NSU by Dobbins with the dedication of the new Dr. H. Jack Dobbins Department of Athletics Conference Room in the NSU Event Center. During the dedication, the conference room was commemorated with a viewing of a video tribute, created by several of Dobbins former players, made possible by contributions of former student-athletes, friends and NSU Athletics. This video pays homage to Dobbins and is shown in the college Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City. The naming right for the Dobbins Conference Room was made possible by friends, colleagues and former Redmen and Lady Reds.
As a highlight to be added to the conference room, Carl Nick, a former player of Dobbins team, and his son, Christopher Nick, generously offered to donate a portrait of Dobbins.
After a conversation with President Turner, we graciously accepted Carls offer, Tony Duckworth, director of Athletics, said.
Duckworth stated that Dobbins invested 35 years of service to NSU and it is important to honor that legacy. He went on to explain that Christopher Nick is the accomplished painter and illustrator that designed and painted the portrait of Dobbins.
It has been a pleasure working with Coach, Carl and Christopher on this project. This portrait is an amazing addition to the Event Center, Duckworth said.
