NSU College of Education recognizes outstanding graduates

Northeastern State University College of Education recognized two students on Dec. 7 during the final intern seminar for students graduating in December 2016.

Frances Millspaugh, a mathematics education major from Tahlequah, was presented with the Outstanding Intern Award.

Each intern coordinator nominated one student for the award. The nominated students were asked to write an essay describing the qualities that will make them an outstanding teacher.

In her essay, Millspaugh wrote about how her early struggles with math and the dedicated professors who helped her overcome them inspired her to become a math teacher.

Millspaughs coordinator, Gary Wing, said she was chosen for the award because of her enthusiasm, love of teaching and improvement.

She has had to work extra hard to learn how to teach math and make changes to become a better intern teacher, Wing said. She took suggestions for improvement with a great attitude and made the changes.

Alex Monk, a health and physical education major from Salina, Oklahoma, was presented the Starting New at Golf Award. The SNAG Award is intended to help new physical education teachers start their career with equipment.

As the recipient of the award, Monk was provided with an All Ages SNAG Coaching Kit. The kit, which retails at $3,079, includes enough modified golf equipment for 48 students.

Students who completed an internship during the fall 2016 semester could apply for the SNAG Award by writing an essay describing how they would use the equipment to make a difference in his or her school and community after graduation.
