NSU Speech and Debate Team brings home awards

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma)--The Northeastern State University Speech and Debate Team dominated at Carl Albert State College Swing Tournament on Oct 7-9.

During the first day of competition, Connor White placed first in Dramatic Interpretation and second in Prose, Gemini Creason snagged second speaker in the International Parliamentary Debate Association and was a semi-finalist in the event as well and Brooke McClary placed fifth in Critical Analysis. Creason also placed first in Critical Analysis, third in After Dinner Speaking, third in Poetry, fourth in Dramatic Interpretation and first in Informative.

The team also competed as a together and placed third in the tournament in individual events and won first overall, an award that combines both debate and individual events. The team was the smallest group of competitors during the event and trumped the competition.

"Although our team is small in number with just four members, they are fierce competitors," Dr. Kristopher Copeland, head debate coach, said.

The all-girls team also claimed victory in the second day of competition which was hosted by CASC Alumni. Connor White placed first in Prose and Brooke McClary placed fourth in Critical Analysis. Ronesha Brooks placed seventh in Extemporaneous Speaking. Gemini Creason placed first in After Dinner Speaking, Dramatic Interpretation and Informative. Creason also took second place in Critical Analysis and Poetry while placing fourth in Prose.

The team competed in the overall category again the second day placing first out of all other competing teams, and third in sweepstakes.
