(Tahlequah, Oklahoma)--Northeastern State University College of Liberal Arts professor, Lance Hunter, was recently featured in Splash 17: Inspiring Subjects for his watercolor piece Catch and Release: Fish Tales IV. His watercolor was featured in the chapter focusing on the human figure.

The Splash series is published annually and showcases the work of international and American watercolor artists, with insights into the selected artists technique and inspiration.

Fish tales are stories often characterized by embellishments and omissions, Hunter explained.
Catch and Release: Fish Tales IV is the fourth in a Fish Tales series of paintings that I have been developing the last few years, Hunter said.

A struggle with culturally manufactured myths and the fragility of relationships inspired Hunter to create this image.

I started working with models posing underwater years ago to help produce the below the surface imagery.

Catch and Release received an award in the Watercolor USA 2015 exhibition at the Springfield Art Museum, in the summer of 2016. Two previous paintings in the Fish Tales series have been featured in American Watercolor Society International Exhibitions in NYC.

Selections for this edition of Splash included international contributions from Canada, Germany, Korea, China and Australia as well as from across the United States.

The number of international contributions seem to increase every year which makes the selection process increasingly competitive. I am very fortunate to have my work chosen for this popular showcase of contemporary watercolors three years in a row, Hunter said.

Hunter shares his experiences and the information gained from creating art included in national and international publications and exhibitions with his students almost daily. He considers his active engagement with creating art as an enhancement to his teaching.

Conceptualization, creativity, specific painting techniques and the promotion of their artwork are all topics that our art students are very interested in, Hunter said.

This is not Hunters first time being featured in the Splash publication, last year he had two paintings selected for Splash 16: Exploring Textures and in Splash 8 Hunter was featured on the title pages for a painting he created that featured his daughter.
