NSU College of Education celebrates new STEAM Maker Lab

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) -- Northeastern State Universitys College of Education is hosting a grand opening for its STEAM Maker Lab Sept. 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Bagley Hall room 136.

The STEAM Maker Lab is a studio dedicated to promoting and enhancing interest in science, technology, engineering, arts and math in education through the use of innovative, immersive and interactive exploration.

Barbara Fuller, director of the Robotics Academy of Critical Engagement, said this year marks the fifth anniversary of the opening of the RACE program within the College of Education.

We have a strong and thriving robotics program and are currently integrating all areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The next logical step for us was to expand and go ever bigger by combining the components from our youth summer programs with our robotics and emerging technologies programs.

The STEAM Maker Lab will serve pre-service teachers in the College of Education, community teachers and families.

We recognize our community must work together to assure our children receive education for a competitive global society in the STEAM areas, Fuller said. This lab will offer high tech such as 3D printing, low tech such as science experiment supplies, explorations and discovery. Supporters of this endeavor include Dr. Debbie Landry, former dean of the College of Education and now provost, Dr. Vanessa Anton, current dean of the College of Education, and Dr. Mark Arant, former provost. All had a vision of serving our communities better through a network in STEM and both provided invaluable support.

This program will include benefits such as science and engineering kits with curriculum and resources available for checkout, professional development for teachers, resources for classroom activities, the latest emerging technologies for training and checkout and a classroom setting for students and teacher training.
