History of River City Players

Created in 1983 by C.H. Parker, now-retired NSU instructor of speech and theater, and the late Joe Davis, NSU jazz studies director, the first show was named Ferlins Folly.

In 1985, RCP shifted to two music-driven productions showcasing popular music and Broadway show tunes, Dr. Robyn Pursley, chair of Art and Drama, said. The country show was added to the mix in 1995 at the Jazz Lab but River City was also still producing at the Playhouse.

In 1999, the Sizzlin Summer Showcase was created and included River City, The Downtown Hoedown and Melodrama. After that season, the collection of shows became known as Stars in the Summer and featured River City at the Shawnee Street Theatre and Downtown Country at the Playhouse.

In 2012, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the summer shows, we moved everything back to the playhouse and started producing it all under the name River City Players, Pursley said.

Through the years, the show eventually evolved into what is now the 35th season of River City Players featuring both country and rock and roll shows.
