NSU Upward Bound to focus on college prep

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) -- Northeastern State University is set to begin serving 60 at-risk students in four area schools through the federally funded Upward Bound program.

Upward Bound provides college preparation support to high school students from low-income families who would be the first generation in their family to attend college. The goal of the program is to improve academic performance and standardized test scores while increasing the rate at which participants complete high school and enroll in and graduate from college.

Services offered by NSU Upward Bound will include tutoring, academic advisement, additional instruction during the summer, preparation for college entrance exams, assistance with college admissions applications, information on federal student aid, financial and economic literacy training, exposure to college campuses and cultural activities and additional skill-building workshops linked to college success.

Weekly tutoring will be in the participants high schools or online. Participants will also stay on the Tahlequah campus for six weeks for the summer component of the program.

Schools to be serviced by NSU Upward Bound include Central High School, Hale High School, McLain High School and Webster High School. These schools were identified due to the high number of families that qualify for the grant programs services.

Upward Bound is a TRIO program that is a result of U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnsons War on Poverty and is designed to increase economic prosperity for low income, first-generation Americans. NSU Upward Bound has been initially funded for five yearsbeginning Sept. 1, 2017 and ending Aug. 30, 2022.
