American Legion begins new scholarship at NSU

Published: 2018-12-19

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) - American Legion Post 241 recently signed an award agreement with Northeastern State University creating a $1,000 scholarship for the Outstanding NSU ROTC Cadet that is continuing their college education.

Post 241, whose namesake is the U.S.S. Batfish submarine memorial in Muskogee, Oklahoma, is donating the funds to provide an annual scholarship for one student. The student must be an active member of NSUs Reserve Officer Training Corps, in good academic standing, have been named by the ROTC Director as the Outstanding ROTC Cadet for that year, and be continuing their college education.

Lieutenant Colonel S.L. Hack Hackworth, commander of the American Legion Post 241 "Batfish," said that the veterans in his post wanted to support the younger generation in their quest for personal excellence.

This will allow them to pick up the banner and move forward with a little education boosta boost to reach the objective of their professional goals, he said.

NSU is committed to training leaders of all kinds, and that should include providing opportunities for training leaders for the military, Dr. Deborah Landry, provost and vice president of academic affairs, said. Reserve Officer Training Corps is an immersive leadership, academic and physical preparation for future leadership roles. I think that ROTC is a great challenge and a way to enhance a college experience. ROTC provides incredible responsibilities early in life and this scholarship is an excellent and appreciated pathway to help develop and shape future leaders.
