NSU-Broken Arrow hosts artist Kathryne Wood during November

(Broken Arrow, Oklahoma) - Northeastern State University-Broken Arrow will host an art exhibit by Kathryne Wood during November in the Visitors Center Gallery of the Administrative Services Building.

Wood has been developing her artistry skills since childhood. In her teen years, the work of John Singer Sargent inspired an interest in portraiture, and she began lessons with Peter Waddell, artist in residence at Tudor Place in Washington, D.C. Waddell helped her develop her skills as a portrait painter and acted as her mentor. She completed her first portrait commission at age 17.

Wood went on to earn a degree in studio art with a concentration in oil painting from Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She continued working as a freelance portrait artist after graduation.

Several years later, Wood was asked to illustrate a childrens book. She says she fell in love with the challenge of telling stories through pictures and realized that storytelling through art is what she had been trying to accomplish all along.

Wood recently enrolled at Liberty University in a Master of Fine Arts in studio and digital arts program to broaden her skill set as an illustrator and visual storyteller.

Wood lives in Midwest City, Oklahoma, with her husband and teenage stepdaughter. In addition to her studies in graphic arts, she continues to accept portrait commissions and experiment with different media and styles, leading to a varied portfolio, but with the same focusto communicate a story.
