NSU opens Veteran Student Lounge with ribbon cutting

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) - Northeastern State University will celebrate the opening of its new Veteran Student Lounge with a ribbon cutting at 3 p.m. Aug. 29 in the University Center Basement.

The Veteran Student Lounge will be a designated space for veterans as recommended by the U.S. Department of Education in the 8 Keys to Veterans Success Sites.

We have made it a goal of ours to enhance our veteran-friendly status, NSU President Dr. Steve Turner said. NSU has partnered with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs with the 8 Keys to Veterans Success.' One of those keys is available space for vets to meet and get work done. That is why we want to do this.

The new space will have four computers, a charging station for electronics, a television and a lounge area.

Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs and a Marine Corps veteran, Dr. Deborah Landry shared that she is excited about the new veteran meeting space.

I was part of the task force that ultimately made us a veteran-friendly campus, Landry said. This lab will take us to the next level in veteran services. This also provides us with the opportunity to connect todays students, who are interested in going into the military, with veterans. Now there will be a place for this to happen.

We have a strong, visible community of veterans in this region. We have many Native American veterans. We want to enhance their opportunities for success and attract more veterans to campus.

The Cherokee Color Guard will perform the opening flag ceremony for the ribbon cutting. Refreshments will follow.
