NSU hosts Women’s History Month Film Festival

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) - Northeastern State University celebrates Womens History Month with the fourth annual Womens History Month Film Festival. The Center for Womens Studies, Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the Department of History organized the film festival, which began March 6 and will continue on March 13 and 27.

The national theme this year for Women's History Month is Nevertheless They Persisted.

We wanted to choose films that highlighted women who were persistent in their endeavors despite any challenges they may have faced, whether it was in the sciences, or the many women of the second wave feminist movement, Dr. Suzanne Farmer, director of the Center for Womens Studies, said. We also chose a film based on a novel that deals with sex reassignment and gender equality issues.

The film festival began with a showing of Hidden Figures on March 6.

The next film in the series will be The Danish Girl on March 13 and Shes Beautiful When Shes Angry on March 27. Both of the upcoming films will be presented at 6 p.m. in Seminary Hall Room 110.

The film festival highlights women from diverse backgrounds overcoming challenges in their lives to succeed.

It is important for our students, and the surrounding community, to have conversations about the roles that women play in film industry, Farmer said. We chose films that showcase strong women, both real and fictional, and hopefully, that will leave our students feeling inspired.

The film festival is open to the public and free to attend.
