NSU Center for Women’s Studies hosts ribbon cutting

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) - Northeastern State Universitys Center for Womens Studies will celebrate its new location in the Woods House with a ribbon cutting Aug. 28 at 4 p.m.

NSU President Steve Turner will open the ceremony and Dr. Suzanne Farmer, director of the Center for Womens Studies, will follow with comments.

NSU Professor Emeritus Dr. Isabel Baker will be the featured speaker. Baker received her Bachelor of Science in education from NSU and her masters and doctorate degree degrees from Oklahoma State University. She served in public education for more than 43 years and also taught at NSU until she retired in 1994. Baker was also named one of the 2010 NSU Centurions.

"Dr. Isabel Baker is a true inspiration, not only in her own community and the state of Oklahoma, but also to all women in academia at large, Farmer said. She earned a Ph.D. and entered the field of higher education at time when it was predominantly male. She is a trailblazer for women in higher education and it is an honor to know her. She has been a champion for women's equality throughout her career, and she continues this fight in retirement."

An open house will follow the ribbon cutting. NSU faculty, staff and students, along with friends of NSU and members of the community are all invited to attend.

The Center for Womens Studies was founded in 2013 and supports many of NSUs core values and goals through an academic minor and programming that promotes an environment of learning and discovery, full inclusion, civic engagement and encourages global knowledge and cultural sensitivity.

The Center for Womens Studies seeks to become a hub of advocacy at NSU and in Green Country for womens issues. Armed with an education and a passion for social activism, it is the centers hope that students will truly be able to go far in advancing the position of women in Oklahoma, nationwide and globally.
