NSU ‘Breaking the Silence’ art exhibit calls for entries

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) - The Center for Tribal Studies and American Indian Heritage Committee is calling all artists for the 47th Annual Symposium on the American Indian Breaking the Silence: #MMIW #MeToo art exhibition at Northeastern State University. Artwork of any medium may be submitted. Deadline for entries is March 8. The exhibition will be displayed in the John Vaughan Library April 1-30.

The exhibition is an effort of coordination with NSU Special Collections and NSU Violence Prevention.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and our focus of the Symposium theme being Indigenous women, I was wanting to bridge the two and raise awareness about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Me Too movements, Alisa Douglas, Center for Tribal Studies coordinator for student programs, said.

Through this exhibit, the groups hope to draw attention to these issues and provide a safe space for artists to give voice to the #MMIW and #MeToo movements.

Submissions are open to anyone, and there is no fee to apply or participate. Three original art pieces may be submitted for consideration.

A 30 percent commission will be taken from all artwork sales during the exhibition. A portion of the funds raised will support NSUs American Indian Emergency Funda program designed to help support NSUs American Indian students with financial emergencies.
