NSU students tie for first place in OK-AR MAA Student Competitions

(Tahlequah, Oklahoma) - Northeastern State University hosted the Oklahoma-Arkansas Mathematical Association of America section meeting on the Tahlequah campus March 28-30.

During the opening night of the event, 26 teams from colleges and universities across the two-state region competed in a jeopardy style mathematics competition. Fielding questions on a variety of topics, student-teams competed for points to earn a spot in the final round.

Three NSU teams participated in the event, with two teams making it into the second round. After the second round, one NSU team had an overall score in the top two which allowed them to participate in the final jeopardy question where they tied for first place with a team from University of the Ozarks.

The winning NSU team members were Jessica Long, Rhys Earlywolf and Lauren Goekler.

Over the 11-year history of this event, this was our best placement ever, Dr. John Diamantopoulos, professor of mathematics, said. Having only ranked as high as second-place one time, and that was in 2012. All three of our teams represented NSU with honor and distinction.

Noah Thompson, Joshua Hurst and David Rathbone participated in round one of the competition. RaShawn Howard, Elliot Ngnatat and Matthew Sullivan made it into round two.
