Northeastern State University names 2024 Model the Way honorees

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Four Northeastern State University employees were named recipients of the 2024 President’s Model the Way award. This award is given to two faculty members and two staff members each year to celebrate their service to the institution. The honorees were recognized during the Employee Recognition event this spring.

The 2024 President’s Model the Way faculty honorees are NSU-Broken Arrow professor of curriculum and instruction, Dr. Meagan Moreland and Cassie Freise, instructor of media studies at NSU-Tahlequah. Staff honorees are Don Vieth, assistant director of athletic strategic communication and weekend athletic events, and Jeff Fagan, facilities coordinator at NSU-Broken Arrow.

Moreland has been employed with NSU for 15 years and works tirelessly to promote her students, ensuring they feel supported. Her nominators described her as someone who goes above and beyond, supporting educators and working with community groups all while displaying a caring attitude.

Freise has been with NSU as an instructor of media studies for 17 years. Her nominators described her as having an unwavering commitment to student development and well-being. They added Freise shows true dedication to her students by being approachable, compassionate and steadfast in her dedication to their success.

Vieth has been part of the NSU team for seven years and works diligently to promote the rich history of NSU athletics. Vieth’s nominators described him as compassionate and caring, adding that Vieth is the first in the building and the last to leave, especially during weekend athletic events.

Fagan has been with the institution for three years. His nominators described him as a problem solver and someone who is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure the facilities are safe and functional, all while having a calm demeanor and great attitude.

“This award exemplifies the exceptional leadership and commitment of our employees,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “It is through their hard work and passion that we continue to transform lives every day, helping to shape the future of higher education and continuing the institution’s rich history.”

Recipients were recognized during the Employee Recognition event on April 25. Each honoree receives a $1,000 check from the NSU Foundation and will have their names, photos and bios displayed on a plaque that will reside in the Administration Building on the Tahlequah campus.
