David L. Rader, a self-employed CPA-PLLC in Fayetteville, Ark., and 1980 graduate of Northeastern State University, has been named to the board of directors for NSU's Alumni Association.
Explaining why he wished to join the board, Rader said, "My career accomplishments are a result of the time my NSU professors invested in me. I want to be a part of NSU's investment in the current generation of NSU students."
While at NSU, Rader was active in the instrumental music program, performing in the brass choir and the concert, jazz and marching bands and serving as Treasurer of Kappa Kappa Psi, the honorary band service fraternity. He said one of his favorite memories is of NSU's Alpha Rho chapter being named one of the nation's best at the August 1979 Kappa Kappa Psi national convention in Atlanta, Ga.
"We were competing against much bigger schools and we won the William A. Scroggs Founder's Trophy," said Rader. "The list of past winners of this award placed NSU in the company of schools like Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia, Indiana, Maryland, Oklahoma State, South Carolina and Texas Tech."
Rader volunteers with the Fayetteville High School Band program and Bugles Across America. He said his greatest honor was being recognized as an Outstanding Volunteer by the Fayetteville Public Schools for his work with the band.
"I served as treasurer for the band program for 10 years, achieving non-profit status recognized by the IRS," he said. "Over that period I helped the students participate in the Fiesta Bowl Parade, Hollywood Christmas Parade, Rose Bowl Parade, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, as well as annual trips to out of state concert, jazz and marching band competitions."
Rader said his time at NSU was fun-filled, but that he and his friends also overcame some difficult obstacles for the instrumental music program purchasing instruments and music and accumulating sufficient travel funds.
"I've used the idea that you can have a good time while accomplishing goals throughout my career," he said. "As a member of the Alumni Association board, I'll enjoy the opportunity to use that philosophy and it will be another good reason to visit NSU and Tahlequah."
He has assumed his place on the board and attends his first meeting Sept. 11.
Rader lives in Fayetteville with Robbi, his wife of more than 20 years. They have two daughters; one working in Bentonville, Ark., and the other a student at the University of Arkansas.
