Weather could not stop the Northeastern State University Annual Golf Classic from being played June 7.
Heavy thunderstorms managed only to delay the opening of the tournament the biggest annual fundraiser for RiverHawk athletics.
We battled Mother Nature early in the day when heavy thunderstorms moved over the course just before the event was scheduled to begin, said Scott Pettus, assistant athletic director.
But the extra time in the clubhouse at Cherokee Hills Golf Club in Catoosa gave tournament participants a chance to mingle.
We were delayed almost two hours, but this gave our athletic staff and members of the Northeastern State Athletic Association the opportunity to visit and network with the players, Pettus said.
In an expansion of past tournaments, more teams were added to the lineup.
The tournament field was expanded from 25 teams last year to a 36-team format, Pettus said, adding the move greatly increased the tournament's fundraising potential.
After a few cancellations due to the weather delay, 29 teams competed in the tournament and raised a total of $30,000 for the Department of Athletics an increase from last year's tournament.
We humbly appreciate the support received from this year's Annual Golf Classic," Pettus said. "Our Athletic Association did a great job of securing sponsorship for the tournament and the entire athletic department staff including our Spirit Squad members and coaches went above and beyond to make this a first-class event.
Other summer golf tournaments provide chances for alumni, community members and faculty from NSU to gather and support university athletics.
The Redmen/Riverhawk Football Reunion and Golf Tournament is July 17 at Cherry Springs Golf Course in Tahlequah. Organized by former head football coach Tom Eckert, the tournament proceeds support the RiverHawk football program. Entry deadline is July 8 and the cost of $100 includes green fees, cart rental and dinner. Those interested can contact Eckert at (908) 456-5450 or visit www.goriverhawksgo.com.
Also slated for July is the Soccer Alumni Golf Tournament. Call Director of Alumni Services and former NSU soccer player Daniel Johnson at 918-444-4211 for more information.
It is vitally important we continue our efforts to network with alumni, lettermen, fans and friends of Northeastern State, Pettus said. These men and women are critical to the overall mission of our athletic department, whether it be through fundraising activities or with their involvement toward student-athlete development.
