Pickin' 'n' Grinnin' Kicks Off Night of Bluegrass

TAHLEQUAH Bring your fiddles, banjos, and guitars out to Beta Field, near Town Branch Eatery, on Saturday evening and discover some local talent when Northeastern State University and The Sequoyah Institute host a Community Bluegrass Jam on Aug. 26.

Northeastern Oklahoma is home to some amazingly talented bluegrass musicians, said Megan White, director of The Sequoyah Institute. Musicians can come out an jam with their fellow performers and create some fantastic music.

The Community Bluegrass Jam, set for 4:30-6:30 p.m. is a prelude to bluegrass phenomena Mountain Heart, performing at 7:30 p.m. at the NSU Center for the Performing Arts as part of the 2006 Galaxy of Stars Series. The concert is sponsored by NSU, The Sequoyah Institute and Allstate The Eldon Stone Agency.

Area bluegrass musicians are already tuning up for the outdoor bluegrass music jam.

Were excited to see so much interest in bluegrass music, said Tahlequah musician Darlene Cobb. The Community Bluegrass Jam is an excellent way to showcase talent to the community and meet other wonderful bluegrass players.

Anyone who just wants to listen to some bluegrass music can bring out blankets and lawn chairs to watch the show.

Slab Daddys BBQ, owned by Mickey Spears, will sell food at the Community Bluegrass Jam, which is free to the public.

Tickets for Mountain Heart are $20 for adults, $18 for NSU alumni, $16 for NSU employees, $14 for senior citizens, $10 for students and children, and $5 for NSU students. Season tickets and group discounts are available for additional savings. For ticket information, contact 918-458-2075.
