NSU Cammi Valdez receives Presidential Award for Excellence in Science

Northeastern State University’s Cammi Valdez receives Presidential Award for Excellence

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Northeastern State University Assistant Dean of Research and Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Dr. Cammi Valdez, was recently announced as a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

Announced by the White House, Valdez is just one of 30 recipients of the award, the nation’s highest honor for mentors of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Recognized for her commitment to mentoring and inspiring the next generation of students, Valdez’s recognition carries a special significance as a Latina scientist.

“Receiving the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring is the highlight of my career,” Valdez said. “As a Latina woman scientist, I have dedicated over a decade of my career to teaching and mentoring hundreds of diverse students in STEM from across the nations in their pursuit of Ph.D. and M.D. degrees and research-related careers.”

Valdez said she is driven by her love of mentoring students and is honored to receive the award while at NSU, stating she believes in regional colleges and the important role they play in the progress of the state of Oklahoma.

“NSU provides quality education at an affordable cost to students in Northeast Oklahoma, and the things our faculty and students are doing are exciting,” Valdez said. “We don’t always get the national spotlight for the innovative research, creative teaching and support we provide for student success, but at this moment, with this national award given by the U.S. President, that work at NSU is being recognized on a national stage.”

NSU President Rodney Hanley praised Valdez’s achievement, noting the significance of this national recognition.

“Dr. Valdez’s dedication to mentoring and student success is truly inspiring,” Hanley said. “At NSU, we are committed to providing high-quality STEM education and fostering a supportive learning environment. Her recognition with this prestigious award highlights the profound impact our faculty has on students’ lives and careers.”

Looking forward, Valdez hopes to continue inspiring students, particularly those from rural communities, to pursue careers in STEM.

“I hope to see more rural students in Oklahoma believing they can go into STEM careers,” Valdez said. “I remember being a young girl interested in science in Oklahoma and finding encouragement in only a few mentors. It is my hope that young folks interested in STEM won’t see the same barriers I experienced and will feel fully supported in their dreams.”

PAESMEM recipients receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, a certificate signed by the President and a trip to Washington, D.C. where they will participate in professional development activities and network with fellow STEM mentors.
