"Communicating the benefits of Northeastern State Universityas part of this wonderful team is an exciting and exhilarating challenge," Smith said. "The history of NSU is second to none in Oklahoma. And the energy students, faculty and staff bring is the heartbeat of this fine institution. My team and I will do justice in telling these stories to the public."

In his work for U.S. Cellular, Smith acquired experience handling advertising budgets and regional marketing strategies. He also developed and improved online campaigns which included the use of social media and text messaging.

"Communication is a constantly changingentity and I look forward to facing the challenges of communicating in the 21st Century," Smith said. "We currently have social media, iPads and smart phones to enhance the more traditional communication outlets such as newspaper, radio and television. It is a great time to use these new mediums to help all 'Gather here. Go far.'"

Commenting on his management style, Smith described it as "servant leadership" and expressed a desire to assist the talent within NSU's campus community by removing hinderances to communication. Referring to the off-campus pool of supporters and potential students, he said branding is critical in modern communication.

"Having a focused, consistent message targeted at the right demographics is one way of making sure our message cuts through the clutter and finds the appropriate audience," he said.

Smith also cited the attraction of working in education as a reason he sought the directorship.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help NSU continueon its mission of empowering individuals to become socially responsible global citizens by creating and sustaining a culture of learning and discovery," Smith said. "I believe everyone has a story to tell and I want to help express these messages. I look forward to a strong partnership with all who call NSU home."

Mark Kinders, vice president for university relations, expressed "delight" with the selection of Smith.

"Tom Smith brings an excellent record of success in marketing, social media and special events," Kinders said. "Hisbackground as a writerfor Tulsa media provides an extra dimension of experience. We have committed, creative professionals in our communications department who, I'm confident, will effectivelytell NSU's compelling story in innovative, new ways under his leadership."
