Enroll now for computer science courses at NSU-BA

(Broken Arrow, OK)--Students can now enroll in computer science courses for Fall 2010 at Northeastern State University-Broken Arrow.

The courses can be applied toward a bachelor of science in Computer Science at the Tahlequah campus, or at the Broken Arrow campus pending approval to offer the degree there.

The two courses to be offered at the campus are Network Security and Intermediate Programming in C++. The courses provide practical experience and enable students to continue an education toward a bachelor's degree in computer science.

The courses will be taught by full-time computer science faculty and offered to students with some completed course work in computer programming or with programming work experience.

We are pleased to offer computer science courses that students can apply toward a degree in computer science or to use directly in their career, said Rick Matzen, associate professor and chair of Computer Science at Northeastern State.

The need for Computer Science skills is drawing increased attention from government and employers as demand for computer science graduates exceeds supply in the U.S. Several employers who hire computer science graduates from Oklahoma have indicated there aren't enough computer science majors to meet their needs.

According to U.S. Department of Labors Bureau of Labor Statistics, Employment of computer software engineers is expected to increase by 32 percent from 2008-2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. In addition, this occupation will see a large number of new jobs, with more than 295,000 created between 2008 and 2018. Demand for computer software engineers will increase as computer networking continues to grow.

The computer science courses at the Broken Arrow campus build on an established computer science curriculum started at NSU in 1982. The Computer Science major offers courses providing a rigorous education in the theoretical and the technical aspects of topics in the field. To meet variations in students interests, computer science courses include topics topics such as software engineering, databases, computer game programming, networking, network security, Web site development, JAVA, C++ and C#.
