Students volunteer for NSU's Small Event, 9/11 Day of Service

Published: 2010-09-15

Approximately 350 students participated in Northeastern State University's Small Event on Sept. 11 in conjunction with the 9/11 National Day of Service.

This year's Small Event was a campus-wide effort to serve and beautify the campus while honoring those impacted by the 9/11 attacks of 2001. The service day and projects were organized by the Office of Student Affairs.

"We did some cleanup around Doc Wadley stadium," said Kathleen Kennedy, director of campus involvement. "We also mulched trees, painted the homecoming stands and picked up trash. It went really well and I was proud of the student turnout. It certainly makes everything look better."

NSU's Tree Campus Advisory Committee also included an Arbor Day Observance as part of the Small Event-National Day of Service. Its project involved the tree mulching.

The Arbor Day Observance event is one of the Five Standards required by the Arbor Day Foundation for NSU to be recognized as a Tree Campus USA. The committee's goal is to apply for recognition by December 2010.

The Northeastern Student Government Association has been active in the project, donating 50 trees which have enhanced the campus environment and its sustainability potential. The value of the donated trees is being calculated into the year's expenditures, another standard required of the project.
