NSU'S Center for Rural Development Hosts EDGE Public Forum

Published: 2003-10-31

TAHLEQUAH Community leaders and local residents will have an opportunity to provide their input on recommendations to improve Oklahoma's economy during an EDGE (Economic Development Generating Excellence) Public Forum held at Northeastern State University on November 4. Hosted by the Oklahoma Center for Rural Development, the event is one of 30 forums scheduled statewide.

Headed by Governor Brad Henry, Oklahoma's EDGE is a joint project of the Department of Commerce and the State Regents for Higher Education. The purpose of the governor's EDGE Project is to develop a focused plan of action that will provide Oklahoma with a new competitive edge in the global economy.

NSU's public forum provides an unprecedented opportunity for community leaders and members to join together in helping to shape such an important statewide initiative. Participants will give their feedback on recommendations drafted by twenty-three expert teams. Team members include people who have started businesses, run businesses and organizations, and who participate in all parts of business, industry, education, and government. Appointed by the governor, these 260 leading Oklahomans represent all regions of the state, both political parties, a range of socioeconomic circumstances and many perspectives.

The event begins promptly at 9 a.m. in Room 614 of the NET Building. There, participants will watch a statewide video presentation featuring Governor Henry, Secretary of Commerce and Tourism Kathy Taylor and Higher Education Chancellor Paul Risser. Following the video, the group will move to the Senator Herb Rozell Ballroom in the University Center where OCRD professionals will lead roundtable discussions on EDGE recommendations until noon. Participants will rotate through six tables addressing the following executive summary topics: Focus on Research Excellence, Make Strategic Investments, Increase Oklahoma's Talent, Build and Manage Infrastructure, Enhance Oklahoma's Health and Culture, Organize Government and Non-Government Organizations for the Future.

Individuals interested in attending this event are encouraged to review the EDGE recommendations by visiting www.okedge.org. Copies of all recommendations will be available at the Northeastern Public Forum.
