NSU announces Edmondson scholarship, Hobsons gift

Published: 2010-07-08

The Northeastern State University Foundation announced recently the establishment of two new funding opportunities for students.

The Drew Edmondson Endowed Debate Scholarship was finalized in May and will provide financial assistance for students who join NSU Speech and Debate.

Edmondson, currently the Oklahoma Attorney General and a 2010 Oklahoma Democratic gubernatorial candidate was named an NSU Distinguished Alumnus in 2004. Friends of Edmondson established the scholarship to honor his award.

To be eligible for the Edmonson scholarship, students must have a high school cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 or higher, have had prior debate experience and be either a member or committed to joining and competing on the NSU Speech and Debate team. Students must be full-time and enrolled in the COMM 2222 Intercollegiate Forensics course.

Applications for the Edmondson scholarship are available at the NSU Student Financial Services office in the CASE building or by calling 918-444-3402.

Also new to NSU is a gift to support the development of international programs for students locally and abroad.

The gift originated through simple discussions with Hobsons administrators regarding how they might assist NSU students to gain international experience, said Richard Carhart, executive director of NSU International Programs.

Hobsons is a company providing technical solutions for recruiting, enrollment and retention to educational institutions around the world and is a leader in international student recruitment.

The one-time gift of $10,000 provides seed money for the International Programs Endowed Fund maintained by the NSU Foundation and has the possibility of annual renewal, said Carhart.

The gift will grow to support study abroad programs and international faculty development initiatives. It is also unique; the first of its kind made by Hobsons.

Private gifts are really the only type of foundation funding that we receive, said Carhart. The generosity of our partners in international education directly benefits both student and faculty and is unique in both its source and potential impact.
