'Get Green for Blue' camp scheduled at NSUBA

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. High school students have the opportunity to explore science through hands-on activities at Northeastern State University-Broken Arrow this summer in Get Green for Blue: Outdoor Investigations to Connect Water to You, one of the free Higher Education Summer Academies sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

Summer Academies supplement high school curricula, give students the experience of learning on a college campus and stress the importance of math and science in potential careers.

Get Green for Blue is organized by NSUBA faculty Dr. Pamela Christol, Dr. Martha Parrott and Dr. Kathi McDowell.

During this course, students will be looking at water quality, clarity and examine pH and oxygen content, McDowell said. They will also be capturing and studying creatures living in these waters and comparing the different water bodies.

An innovative feature is the incorporation of service learning through a partnership with the Rogers County Conservation District outdoor classroom. Get Green for Blue provides experience-based learning with a focus on imagination, creativity and experimentation. In teams, students will learn about water quality through indoor and outdoor activities that involve collecting data, analyzing the health of water bodies and determining possible solutions to water quality problems. On the final day students present their findings to their families.

This is a fun-filled week for learning science and getting in the water, McDowell said.

Get Green for Blue is open to Oklahoma residents entering 8th, 9th or 10th grade. There are 27 spaces available. Lunch and transportation for field trips is provided and students receive a $50 stipend. Students must commute to the NSUBA campus each day. The program runs June 6-10 from 9 a.m. 4 p.m.

Parent orientation is June 6 and student presentations are June 10. Both meetings are in Room 112 of the Liberal Arts Building.
