"Get Green for Blue" camp to be held at NSU-Broken Arrow

(Broken Arrow, OK)--Put on your waders, grab your net and lets catch those critters! High school students have the opportunity to explore science through hands-on activities at Northeastern State University Broken Arrow this summer in Get Green for Blue: Outdoor Investigations to Connect Water to You, one of the Higher Education Summer Academies sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

Summer Academies supplement high school curriculum, give students the experience of learning on a college campus and stress the importance of math and science in potential careers.

"Get Green for Blue" is organized by NSU BA faculty Dr. Pamela Christol, Dr. Martha Parrott and Dr. Kathi McDowell.

The 'Get Green for Blue' program deals with water quality and environmental issues, McDowell said. It was chosen by the Oklahoma Board of Regents for Higher Education for many reasons, including the innovative features of our program.

One innovative feature is the incorporation of service learning through a partnership with the Rogers County Conservation District outdoor classroom. "Get Green for Blue" provides experience-based learning with a focus on imagination, creativity and experimentation. In teams, students will learn about water quality through indoor and outdoor activities that involve collecting data, analyzing the health of water bodies, and determining possible solutions to water quality problems. On the final day students present their findings to their families.

"Get Green for Blue" is open to Oklahoma residents entering the 9th or 10th grade. Lunch and transportation for field trips is provided and the students receive a $50 stipend. Students need to commute to the NSU-BA campus each day. The program runs from 9 a.m. 4 p.m., June 7-11.

We are looking forward to working with the kids and exposing them to the NSU-BA campus, faculty and the wonderful opportunities we have here, Christol said.
