Historic Highs for Contributions

Aggregate donations and the number of benefactors to Northeastern State University Foundation hit record highs for the nonprofit in 2009.

Accoring to John Gyllin, NSU director of Development, early number-crunching amounts show more than 2,200 donors contributing nearly $2 million to the university.

"Our alumni are being as philanthropic as they can, in spite of the economy," Gyllin said. "It shows in our 2009 numbers."

Figures show contributions to NSU increased 12 percent in 2008 against an average two percent drop in donations to universities nation-wide. Donations to Northeastern rose approximately $700,000, or 64 percent above 2008.

NSU's donors "are bucking national trends," said Gyllin, and the university is grateful.

"I am humbled and I am absolutely amazed at the support that comes from the loyal and generous alumni and friends of this institution," Gyllin said. "Whatever program they are supporting, whatever area of campus, people genuinely want to support Northeastern and I think it is a testament to this institution, its leadership and the direction that we're headed."
