Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 6-7, are two important days in Northeastern State Universitys homecoming week, Welcome Back To Fabulous Northeastern State. Three events highlight the two days.
Homecoming consists of many different events put on by different groups from NSU, said Tori Proctor, homecoming student director. The purpose of all the homecoming activities is to promote school spirit and get students excited to be a RiverHawk.
The homecoming king and queen candidate campaigning and elections kick off the Wednesday events at 9 a.m. in the University Center lobby and circle drive and ends at 2 p.m.
When NSGA conducts a student body election for homecoming king and queen, all students are encouraged to participate in elections, said Laura Boren, dean of student affairs.
Ending the Wednesday events is casino night sponsored by the Northeastern Activities Board and held in the University Center Rozell Ballroom from 8-10 p.m. This is the debut for casino night in NSUs homecoming. It was created to fit homecoming week's Las Vegas theme.
This is a student targeted event, said Kathleen Kennedy, director of campus involvement. It is in the middle of the week to provide a low stress, fun event for students who have been working hard on homecoming activities all week.
The homecoming king and queen candidate campaigning and elections continue Thursday in the UC lobby and circle drive from 9 a.m. 2 p.m. Student IDs are required to vote.
Ending the mid-week homecoming activities is the pep rally and bonfire held at Beta Field from 7:30-9 p.m.
It is great to see the bonfire and spend time hanging out with friends while watching it burn, said Kennedy. It gets everyone excited about attending the football game on Saturday and renews their pride in NSU.
Boren said the pep rally and bonfire is open to all students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community.
Part of the college experience is celebrating your school, and homecoming is the best way to do that," said Proctor. "This is a time where everyone meets to have a good time. The ties that are made here at NSU are unlike any other. It becomes a major part of defining who one is, so to come back and reflect on days past and share that with current students is always fun.
