Northeastern State University Homecoming set for late September

The homecoming theme is a highly anticipated announcement for the NSU community, and this years theme was recently announced. The 2016 NSU Homecoming theme is Theres no place like Homecoming. This year will be themed all things NSU and Wizard of Oz. Northeastern State Universitys 2016 homecoming weekend is scheduled for Sept. 23-24. This years big weekend will also be paired with the annual Family Weekend, adding more events, energy and NSU enthusiasm.

Events leading into Homecoming & Family Weekend will start Sunday, Sept. 18 with the traditional Paint the Town Green event where students visit local businesses along the downtown parade route and decorate the windows with all things green, including elements of this years theme. NSU hosts events all throughout the week including many student-led activities, community-wide street party with fireworks, a bonfire and spirit rally, and homecoming court elections.

On Friday, Sept. 23, the Alumni Association and NSUs Parent Program will be hosting several events including Shop Downtown Tahlequah, the Green and White Golf Classic, Brunch, Brushes and Bubbles, a float trip, the Alumni Association Honors Dinner, and Friday Night Flashback.

The homecoming football game vs. Fort Hays State will go down on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. Outstanding alumni recognitions and homecoming court announcements are made during halftime. Other Saturday activities include the Champions Breakfast hosted by NSUs Department of Athletics, the homecoming parade, tailgating, and the announcement of the Parent Programs Family of the Year.

The highly anticipated Emerald Ball will round out homecoming week Saturday evening. Emerald Ball, in its 19th year, is NSUs premier gala benefitting student scholarships. The evening includes dinner, auctions, emeralds and high-profile entertainment.

In addition to NSUs Homecoming & Family Weekend, the greater Tahlequah area will be hosting visitors for other area events including the Fin and Feather 48th Annual Fall Festival Arts and Crafts Show and Sale in Gore, Oklahoma, the 17th Annual Bikes, Blues, and BBQ in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and the Medicine Stone red dirt music festival, located outside Tahlequah.

During a recent City Council meeting, Melissa Harris, Tahlequah Tourism director and NSU alumna, described how lively and exciting the area would be. She encourages visitors to start planning now and secure their travel plans.

Two hotels in the area are already booked for the weekend, and a third hotel is almost full.
