NSU to offer new German and Italian cultural courses

Three cultural courses will be offered by Northeastern State University through the instruction of new faculty member Loredana Moccia.

The classes in German and Italian culture will be offered beginning with the Spring 2011 semester. The Italian class will be listed with English courses. No previous foreign language skill is required to enroll in the German and Italian culture classes.

The classes will explore the two countries' history, economy, people, food, art, religion, sport, places, communication patterns and ways to do business. Students will then draw comparisons between the Italian or German culture and the American culture.

"These will be fun classes, and you will want to take a trip to these countries after these courses," said Moccia. "Students will also learn some basic language skills that are useful in Germany or Italy and will focus on the differences between these country's cultures and that of the U.S. Nowadays, with the globalization of business, it is vital to know about other cultures and ways to do business."

Two new German courses will be offered and meet at 11 a.m. Introduction to German Language and Culture (GERM 1013, ZAP 1946) will meet Mondays and Wednesdays and German Culture and Civilization (GERM 3203, ZAP 1963) will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Italian Culture and Civilization (ENGL 4903, ZAP 1875) will convene Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:30 p.m.

Moccia will also teach a Monday-Wednesday-Friday German II course (GERM 1123, ZAP 0930) which will meet at 1 p.m. and be carried via ITV to East Central University in Ada.

The courses in German Culture and Civilization and Italian Culture and Civilization will be offered via ITV to NSU-Tahlequah.
