NSU Faculty Brass Quintet to perform Feb. 26

(Tahlequah, OK)--The Northeastern State University Faculty Brass Quintet, featuring current and emeritus music instructors, presents its spring concert Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. in the NSU Jazz Lab.

Trumpet players are Dr. Jason Dovel, assistant professor of music in the College of Liberal Arts, and Dr. Robert Bailey, emeritus professor of music. Dovel has been with the NSU faculty since 2007. Bailey has been emeritus since 2007. Both earned their doctoral degrees at the University of North Texas.

The trombonist is Dr. Norman Wika, assistant professor of music and director of bands at NSU. He also joined the faculty in 2007 and holds a doctorate from the University of Connecticut. Wika has served as principal trombone of the Manchester (Conn.) Symphony and as an active substitute player in the Classic Brass Band of Mansfield, Conn.

New to the group this year are Marsha Thompson, horn, and Rod Clark, tuba. Thompson is a member of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas and Clark, a busy freelance player in Tulsa, is a former manager of NSU's Jazz Lab.

The concert will feature a diverse program including Johann Sebastian Bachs Fugue in G Minor and My Spirit Be Joyful, the St. Louis Brass Quintets famous arrangement of Michael Preatorius dances, Giovanni Gabrielis Canzona No. 4, the Spanish pasodoble Gallito, as well as contemporary selections such as Raise the Roof by Gwyneth Walker.

The quintet has already given several performances this year, including during NSU Brass Day and the NSU Music Gala Recital, as well as at public schools in Fort Gibson, Muskogee and Tulsa.
