NSU Alumni Association awards 2010-11 Legacy Scholarships

Four freshmen at Northeastern State University are recipients of the 2010-11 Legacy Scholarships, awarded through the Alumni Association and the Office of Alumni and Development.

Receiving a scholarship for $1,000 is Delaney Tusia of Fort Gibson. Matthew Foreman of Peggs and Johnlee Quiett of El Paso, Texas, each received scholarships of $750 and Kaitlin Bowin of Park Hill received a $500 award.

The scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen with family who attended NSU in the past. Applicants must have a cumulative high school grade-point average of at least 3.0. Applications are reviewed by a committee drawn from the Alumni Association's board of directors. The committee determines the number of scholarships, the amounts to award and the recipients. This year's committee was chaired by Becky Gore, assistant district attorney to the 12th Judicial District of Oklahoma.

Daniel Johnson, director of alumni services, said the Legacy Scholarships are funded by a permanent endowment supported by private donations and the Alumni Association and encouraged incoming freshmen with family who attended or graduated from NSU to apply.

"The Legacy Scholarship and others of this nature make a college education from Northeastern more affordable and accessible," Johnson said."The Legacy Scholarship, specifically, is a way to recognize not only the excellent academic performance of its recipients but also the spirit of volunteerism that is vital to the success and value of the NSU Alumni Association."

Johnson said new students with familial ties to campus are celebrated at NSU.

"We are excited when we see incoming freshmen who come from previous generations of NSU students," he said. "As a university it is incumbent on us to provide access to the same or even better quality learning experiences that their family members who preceded them received."
