Rowdy the RiverHawk Reading Program visit area elementary

(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- Northeastern State Universitys Miss NSU and Rowdy the RiverHawk Reading Program visited Wister Elementary and Heavener Elementary on April 5, 2016 to promote literacy by sharing a book reading and presentation.

The Miss NSU position has traditionally focused on reading in the elementary schools. In 2014, former Miss NSU LaTasha Atcity included Rowdy, thereby creating the Rowdy the RiverHawk Reading Program.

Heather Ballew holds the title of Miss NSU this year. Ballews official platform is bullying prevention. Ballew was honored to join Rowdy and read to the children of Wister and Heavener elementary. She was especially excited to visit her hometown school of Wister.

Not only was I flooded with so many happy memories from seeing my old teachers, I was happy to see that our small school has grown in size, Ballew said.

Ballew enjoyed meeting young students enthusiastic about learning. She said that the students optimism about reading was truly uplifting.

During the event around 800 books were given away to students at the schools and students had the chance to have a group photo taken with Miss NSU and Rowdy.
