Two more Second Century Camps are July 11-15

Tahlequah, Okla. --- Northeastern State Universitys Second Century Camps for kids continue July 11-15 with Photography 101 and Mythbusters: Science. Enrollment for the camps is expanded and openings for both remain available.

The camps are intended for ages 8-up. They are offered by the communication, art and theatre department in the College of Liberal Arts.

The science mythbusters camp is essentially modeled on the Discovery Channel television show, said instructor David Fuller. We will test some common stories or myths about household-related issues and determine whether they are true through the scientific process. Well test a couple of myths a day, or eight for the week. The campers will keep a science journal and predict which myths are true and false. After the tests, well discuss why the predictions were right or wrong.

Fuller, the debate coach at Tahlequah High School and drama instructor at Tahlequah Middle School, said a sample experiment might be determining the dirtiest place in a typical house.

Is it the toilet? Well find out, he said. The answer might be surprising.

Mythbusters: Science campers will also take a field trip on Friday. Fuller said tentative plans are to visit the USS Batfish Memorial in Muskogee and to watch an IMAX movie in the afternoon. Parents are welcome to attend the Friday trip.

Scheduled the same week is Photography 101 with Cassie Freise, instructor of mass communication and faculty adviser to NSUs student newspaper The Northeastern.

Photography 101 campers will experiment with visual art through photographs and discover what makes a great picture. Students will learn how to hold and use a camera, choose the right subject and employ effective methods of centering, focusing and lighting.

Enrollment is $125 per camper, which includes lunch and a snack. The camps each run for five days from 8:30 a.m. 5 p.m. Drop off and pick up is at the NSU University Center.
