NSU Student Government Association recognizes Fries

(Broken Arrow, OK)--Cindi Fries, an instructor in Educational Foundations and Leadership at Northeastern State University-Broken Arrow, was recently recognized by the NSU Student Government Association as "a faculty member who has made a difference."

The SGA held a banquet April 26 in the Tower Room of the Webb Education Technology Center on the Tahlequah campus to celebrate her selection.

I am very humbled and pleased to receive this recognition from the NSU Student Government Association," Fries said. "It is nice to know that my efforts and work has been recognized by those who matter the most. I am also especially flattered since I know I am among many, many faculty who make a difference in the lives of our students every day.

On campus Fries presents workshops during the Celebration of Teaching an event which introduces middle- and high-school students, especially minorities, to the possibilities of teaching as a career. She is also a sponsor for the Kappa Rho Chapter of the education honor society Kappa Delta Pi.

This year, she was instrumental in developing an international option for the College of Education's Pre-Internship II course.

"I am very excited that this May I will be taking the first group of teacher candidates to teach for a week at the Vienna International School in Vienna, Austria," she said. "This group of five education majors will have the opportunity to teach students from over 90 different countries in an elementary and early childhood school."

Fries will lead another group to Vienna in November.

"Having lived and traveled in Asia and Europe, I know the value of experiencing another countrys culture," she said. "This will increase the awareness of our teacher candidates concerning cultural differences beyond the regions of northeastern Oklahoma."

Fries has been a member of NSU's faculty since 2004. She holds a bachelor's degree in special education from the University of Tulsa and a master's in school counseling from NSU. She is completing her doctoral dissertation at Oklahoma State University.
