NSU graduate, Chelbie Turtle, garners multiple awards
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Former Northeastern State University Student Government Association president and December 2023 standout graduate, Chelbie Turtle was recognized as NextGen Under 30 2023 and Higher Education Student of the Year 2023.
Turtle, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and Park Hill, Oklahoma resident, graduated with a bachelor of arts in political science and criminal justice. She was named Higher Education Student of the Year 2023 by the Oklahoma Council for Indian Education and NextGen Under 30 2023 in the Policy and Public Service category under the Cherokee Nation Businesses.
“I am sincerely honored and humbled to have been recognized with both awards,” Turtle said. “While I knew of my nomination for each award, I was surprised, excited and grateful to be selected to receive them. I would like to express my gratitude to those who nominated me for these two awards, along with the individuals, professors and mentors who have shared their wisdom, time and guidance with me.”
During her time at NSU, Turtle said two of her biggest influences were Dr. Kendra Haggard and Dr. Christopher Weaver, noting that meeting with them her freshman year shaped the trajectory of both her academic career and leadership abilities.
“Throughout my time as an undergraduate student, I felt supported and encouraged while pursuing my academics, career opportunities and extracurriculars,” Turtle said. “I have gained incredible mentors and friends from our NSU community who have and will continue to impact my life.”
Haggard, director of student engagement and transitions, said she enjoyed working with Turtle during her time at NSU, emphasizing her organized and caring attitude in helping others succeed and feel welcome on campus.
“Chelbie is an amazing leader and student,” Haggard said. “She was a peer instructor, SOAR leader and Lead Peer Instructor because she wanted to help our incoming students find a home at NSU.”
Throughout her life, Turtle has served her tribe and communities by remaining involved and engaged. She has served in positions such as the Cherokee Nation’s Jr. Miss Cherokee 2014-15, Miss Cherokee 2021-22 and the Oklahoma Federation of Indian Women as Jr. Miss Indian Oklahoma 2017. She has also been a member and president of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Youth Council, graduated from the N.E.W. Leadership Oklahoma program in 2023 and held membership in numerous on-campus student organizations.
Turtle said she is taking a gap year to prepare for graduate programs while continuing to gain experience in fields of interest.
“After graduating with my bachelor’s degrees, my primary goal is to continue furthering my education by pursuing a law degree,” Turtle said. “I hope to pursue a career in law so that I may further serve my community and tribe.”
