NSU to host Native Strong recruitment event - Jan. 22, 2021

(Tahlequah, Okla.) – The Center for Tribal Studies and Admissions and Recruitment Office at
Northeastern State University will host Native Strong, a hands-on experience for high school
students to learn more about the admissions process, Jan. 22, 2021. Students can expect to learn
more about the application process, scholarships, Native student support services and much
more.

“We want to give students tools that they can actually use, rather than just throwing a bunch of
information at them,” Sky Wildcat, student services coordinator, said.
Wildcat says they want to provide Native high school students with the opportunity to get some
cultural exposure, otherwise students may have never felt the need to go to a powwow or other
cultural events.

The Native Strong event will feature culture-focused presentations, including a variety of
different dances performed by NSU Native student leaders and two panel sessions.
In the first session, future students can interact with a panel of NSU Native student leaders and
ask questions. Family members have the opportunity for exchange with a panel of NSU faculty
and staff in the second session. There each party can find out more about their perspective
student and university.

“This won’t be like a typical conference or a lecture,” Wildcat said. “This is an opportunity for
anybody to learn what college has to offer and what it means to be a Native student attending
college.”

The Native Strong event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Center on the Tahlequah
Campus. If the event is unable to happen in person, it will be available via Zoom.
