NSU to celebrate centennial anniversary of first homecoming

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Northeastern State University will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its first homecoming with a week’s worth of events and activities from Oct. 21-26. 

This year’s theme is “Forever Green” to celebrate as the NSU community looks back on the past 100 years of homecoming. 

The celebration will begin on Monday, Oct. 21 with the “Green Til I Dye” parties. NSU-Broken Arrow will host a fountain-dyeing at 11 a.m. while the Tahlequah campus will host theirs at 5:15 p.m. in Second Century Square followed by a Street Party beginning at 6 p.m. on Beta Field.

This ceremonial kick-off to NSU’s homecoming week is free and open to the public. The highlight of this event is the tradition of dyeing the fountain green. There will be tailgate games, food, performances by the spirit squads and greetings from NSU President Rodney Hanley and others to officially kick off homecoming week.

Wednesday, Oct. 23, brings on the Alumni Teach-In provided by the College of Business & Technology as well as the Time Capsule Installation beginning at 6 p.m. in Second Century Square.

The Green & White Golf Classic returns on Friday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. Call the NSU Alumni Association at 918-444-4200 for more information or to join the waitlist.

Mimosas on Main will begin at 11 a.m. in Downtown Tahlequah. This event is sponsored by Tahlequah Main Street and is open to the public. Downtown merchants will be open for business and participating establishments will be serving mimosas and homecoming deals.

Friday evening, this year’s alumni honorees will be formally honored at the Alumni Association Honors Reception at 5:30 p.m. at the NSU Jazz Lab. This year’s honorees are Distinguished Alumna Barbara Abercrombie ‘93, Distinguished Alumnus Reggie Ivey ‘92, Distinguished Alumna Christina Justice ’00, Outstanding Young Alumnus Dillin Springwater ’15 and President’s Award for Community Service recipient, Michael Spurgeon. 

Following the Honors Reception, there will be a Homecoming Choral Performance featuring guest conductor, Dr. Don Studebaker and Alumni Performers, beginning at 7 p.m. in the NSU Center for Performing Arts. The event is open to the public and alumni are encouraged to participate.

At 7:30 p.m., there will be a Bonfire & Spirit Rally at Beta Field that is open to the public. Following the bonfire, a Friday Night Flashback will be held at Kroner & Baer where those in attendance can enjoy live music, yard games and an outdoor beer garden.

As homecoming rounds off on Saturday, the day will begin with a Homecoming 5k Fun Run at 8:30 a.m. that is open to the public. Participants will meet at the University Center for check-in. 

All former athletes are invited to celebrate the legacy of athletic competition at NSU with the Athletics-Lettermen Breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. at the Jack Dobbins Field House. Advanced registration is required to attend.

Champagne Bingo begins at 11 a.m. in the Rozell Ballroom located in the University Center. This event is open to the public, although advanced registration is required.

The River of Green Homecoming parade will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. The parade will take place in downtown Tahlequah through NSU’s campus. 

After the parade, tailgating will begin at The Landing at Doc Wadley Stadium before NSU faces off against Lincoln University at 6 p.m. 

NSU’s centennial homecoming is presented by BancFirst, Century 21, the Cherokee Nation, Northeastern Health Systems, Servpro and Suzanne Myers.
