NSU Department of History presents An Evening with Donald L. Fixico – Nov. 14
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University’s Department of History, in collaboration with the Center for Tribal Studies and Too Fond of Books, invites the Tahlequah community to An Evening with Donald L. Fixico.
Fixico, who is an enrolled member of the Sac & Fox Nation and descendant of the Shawnee, Mvskoke and Semvnole people, is a Regents’ and Distinguished Foundation Professor of History from Arizona State University. During the event, he will discuss his latest book, The State of Sequoyah: Indigenous Sovereignty and the Quest for an Indian State. His work follows the State of Sequoyah Movement that sought to create an Indigenous State in present day eastern Oklahoma.
“The Department of History and the Center for Tribal Studies are thrilled to work together to bring Dr. Donald L. Fixico to Northeastern State University in Tahlequah,” Dr. Michelle Martin, assistant professor of History, said. “Having a scholar as renowned as Dr. Fixico at NSU is an amazing opportunity for our students, faculty and staff to engage with an individual who has spent his entire career researching and writing Native American history. Over his long career Dr. Fixico has worked to elevate the field of Native American history and ensure that Indigenous perspectives are front and center in his work.”
Martin said that as a historian, she is looking forward to hearing Fixico speak about his latest work and share the history of the State of Sequoyah movement. She said this is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about this important issue from a nationally recognized expert in the field of Native American history and federal Indian policy.
“Tribal sovereignty is an issue that is in the news on a regular basis in Oklahoma and I hope that my students and community members learn about the importance of tribal sovereignty in the past and present,” Martin said. “The Department of History is grateful to the Center for Tribal Studies and their support and co-sponsorship for this event. We hope that community members will attend and take advantage of this opportunity to learn about an important movement in the history of Indian Territory and the Five Southeastern Nations.”
In addition to discussing his book, attendees will also have the opportunity to get their copy signed after the reception. Books will need to be preordered through the registration process, only a limited amount of copies of the book will be available to purchase during the event.
An Evening with Donald L. Fixico takes place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 at the NSU Jazz Lab, located at 315 N. Muskogee Ave. This event is sponsored by Too Fond of Books and is free and open to the public.
