Two new scholarships created at NSU

Published: 2010-05-27

Northeastern State University announces the creation of two scholarships with the NSU Foundation.

The scholarships are the Lawrence White Family Foundation Scholarship and the Lou Summers Endowed Vocal Music Scholarship.

The White scholarship is established by the Lawrence White Family Foundation of Orlando, Fla. The foundation wishes to assist students living in a non-traditional household, where one or both parents are not in residence. The award will be to one male and one female graduate of Stilwell High School who are of American Indian descent. Recipients must maintain a grade-point average of 2.5 to continue receiving the scholarship.

Lloyd and Linda (Summers) Spyres established a scholarship in the name of Mrs. Spyres mother, Zelma Lou (Rogers) Summers to assist students majoring in Vocal Music. Mrs. Spyres graduated from NSU with a bachelor's degree in 1992, is owner and agent of Vacations R Us in Tahlequah and has been chair of the Tourism Council of the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce. The scholarship will be awarded to Oklahoma residents recommended by NSU's vocal music faculty.

The White scholarship will make its first awards to students at NSU during the Fall 2010 term, while the Summers award will become available to students when it matures sufficiently to be self-sustaining.
