Published: 2010-02-24

(TAHLEQUAH, OK)--The hardcover commemorative history book, Roots from the Cherokees, Promises for Our Future: The Chronicle of Northeastern State University, was recently one of six books nominated for an Oklahoma Book Award for Design Illustration from the Oklahoma Center for the Book.

The Oklahoma Book Awards, a Celebration of Oklahoma Books and Authors, will be held April 17 at the Oklahoma Heritage Association Gaylord-Pickens Museum in Oklahoma City. Tickets are available by contacting Connie Armstrong at (800) 522-8116.

The Oklahoma Center for the Book is a state affiliate of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, and is organized to focus attention on the vital role of books and reading in our lives.

Roots from the Cherokee was released in conjunction with the NSU Centennial Celebration, and covers 180 years of history, from the institutions 19th century origins through the 2009 Centennial Celebration.

Filled with photographs, iconic images and personal memories, the book illustrates a timeline dating back more than a century, and is based on the official history of the institution written by Dr. Brad Agnew, NSU professor of History, in tribute to the 2009 Centennial Celebration.

Photographs and memorabilia were provided by NSU Archives, under the direction of University Archivist Victoria Sheffler, as well as the Oklahoma Historical Society and personal collections. The book is dedicated to those who laid the foundation and maintained the educational tradition pioneered by the Cherokees, and begins with an introduction written by Dr. Don Betz, NSU president.
