NSU Second Century Camps conclude with Leadership, Iron Chef Kids

Northeastern State Universitys Second Century Camps for kids conclude July 25-29 with Leadership and Iron Chef Kids. Enrollment for the camps is expanded and openings are available for both.

Leadership is intended for students in high school and middle school. Iron Chef Kids is for ages 8-up. The camps are offered by the communication, art and theatre department in the College of Liberal Arts.

The leadership camp is a terrific learning opportunity for older students in the area, said Dr. Dana Eversole, an organizer of the camps.

Instructor Dr. Amy Aldridge Sanford said the camp will cover numerous leadership topics including networking, introductions, working in groups, personal leadership, time management, setting goals, social responsibility, volunteering, activism, personal presentation, college and scholarship applications, resume writing, job interviews and public speaking.

I always enjoyed these kinds of camps when I was in high school and I am certain attendees will enjoy this camp, Sanford said. Good leadership is timeless and involves much more than just being elected to a position.

A $50 deposit will reserve a space in the Leadership camp. Those wishing to enroll may call Eversole at 918-444-2891 or 918-456-4491. Questions should be directed to Sanford at aldridga@nsuok.edu.

I encourage students who are interested to e-mail me with any questions," said Sanford. "They don't need to feel like their parents have to do it for them. Im also open to taking requests from campers about things they would like to learn about leadership.

Iron Chef Kids will educate campers on food preparation and cooking techniques and discuss healthy dietary choices.

Our campers will cook their lunches and snacks, said camp instructor Barbara Fuller. We will teach food and kitchen safety and proper table setting and eating manners. But most importantly, we want to help campers learn to choose fresh foods which are conducive to good nutrition.

Treats wont be excluded from the preparations. Fuller said campers will learn to make homemade ice cream and a Friday field trip is planned to Blue Bell Creameries in Broken Arrow. She added that parental participation is welcome and that we want to make enough food to allow the campers to bring home leftovers.

Full price for either camp is $125 per camper, which includes lunch and a snack. The camps each run for five days from 8:30 a.m. 5 p.m. Drop off and pick up is at the NSU University Center.
