Second Century Camp sessions begin June 27 at NSU

Tahlequah, Okla. Northeastern State Universitys Second Century Camps for kids begin June 27 with Buggin Out and The Art of Color. Openings remain for both.

Buggin Out is intended for children ages 4-7 and The Art of Color is for ages 8-up. The camps are offered by the communication, art and theatre department in the College of Liberal Arts.

We will be exploring bugs, said Kim Copeland, instructor of Buggin Out. There will be a lot of hands-on activities and explanation. It is amazing what can be caught in a net, and the campers will make bug habitats using 2-liter bottles. They will have chances to be creative and they will control much of what they are doing.

The Art of Color instructor is Anthony Amason, who graduated from NSU in May with a masters degree in education.

We will be learning everything one would want to learn about color, he said. We will discuss such artists as Van Gogh, Picasso and Pollack, who used color during their careers to successfully get their points across.

Price is $125 per camper, which includes lunch and a snack. The camps each run for five days from 8:30 a.m. 5 p.m. Drop off and pick up is at the NSU University Center. On Friday camp participates take a field trip.

We will attend the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Amason said. We will also visit Purple Glaze Studio where the campers will have an opportunity to paint ceramics.

The Buggin Out field trip is not finalized, but tentative plans include a trip to Philbrook and a walk through its beautiful gardens to identify insects.

Everyone who teaches these camps is excited and looking forward to the fun of having everyone here and learning, Copeland said. Parents with campers in Buggin Out are welcome to join us at any time and see what we are doing or go on our field trip.
