Northeastern State Universitys Second Century Camps for kids continue July 18-22 with Sisters Grimm and Lights, Drama, Action. Enrollment for the camps is expanded and openings for both are available.
The camps are intended for ages 8-up. They are offered by the communication, art and theatre department in the College of Liberal Arts.
The Lights, Drama, Action camp will, in a short span of time, take the concept of a stage show from the very beginning to the very end, said instructor David Fuller. I am thinking we might do a couple of vignettes from the old School House Rock series. The campers will pick a song, design the set and costumes, work on stage makeup and go through the entire creative process.
Fuller, the debate coach at Tahlequah High School and drama instructor at Tahlequah Middle School, said the ultimate goal is to perform the vignettes on Thursday after just three-plus days of preparation. Parents are invited to attend.
Another facet of the camp will involve work with improv, he said. We will conduct some scenes and allow the students to work on their improv skills. This is a highlight that the campers always enjoy.
Lights, Drama, Action campers will also take a field trip on Friday. Fuller said tentative plans are to visit an area performing arts facility and watch a film in the afternoon. Parents are welcome to attend the Friday trip.
Scheduled the same week is Sisters Grimm. Camp instructor is Sarah Williams.
Sisters Grimm campers will find out what happened to Snow White after she married her prince and the Big Bad Wolf after he blew down the houses. Students will immerse themselves in fairy tales surrounding some of the most famous characters based on the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales and the Sisters Grimm childrens books.
Enrollment is $125 per camper, which includes lunch and a snack. The camps each run for five days from 8:30 a.m. 5 p.m. Drop off and pick up is at the NSU University Center.
Upcoming camps Leadership and Iron Chef Kids are July 25-29.
