Science and Technology Seminar schedule announced

With six events scheduled for the Fall 2010 term, Northeastern State Universitys Department of Natural Sciences announced its annual Science and Technology Seminar Series.

The series is arranged by Dr. John de Banzie, professor of biology.

The seminar series is an opportunity for our students and others to hear about cutting edge research in a broad range of disciplines from the scientists actually conducting the research," said de Banzie.

The series begins Sept. 1 and continues every other Wednesday. Each seminar starts at 3 p.m. in the Science Building, Room 160.

The series schedule, topics and speakers:

Sept. 1 Watching Nanoparticles and Biomolecules One Molecule at a Time: to the Average and Beyond. Colin Heyes, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Arkansas.

Sept. 15 Biofuel Production: a Feedstock to Tailpipe Approach. Susan Stagg-Williams, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Kansas.

Sept. 29 The Distribution Patterns, Transport and Effects of Emerging Organic Contaminants from Urban and Agricultural Sources. Mike Meyer, U.S. Geological Survey, Lawrence, Kansas.

Oct. 13 Inflammation in Disease and Healing: It's Not Always a Bad Thing. Randle Gallucci, Department of Pharmacology, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Oct. 27 Navigating Monogamy: on Love, Fidelity and Spatial Memory. Alex Ophir, Department of Zoology, Oklahoma State University.

Nov. 10 Conservation Genetics of Seaside Alder, One of the Rarest Trees in Oklahoma. Phil Gibson, Department of Zoology, University of Oklahoma.

Speakers for the seminars were suggested by members of the NSU faculty.

"Dr. Heyes was recommended by Chris Burba and Dr. Stagg-Williams by Tiffany Maher," said de Banzie. "Dr. Meyer was suggested by Cindy Cisar, who is hoping to develop a research collaboration, and Dr. Gibson by Monica Macklin."
