Lights On Seminary Hall is Nov. 30

Published: 2010-11-19

As the holidays approach, preparations are made to make Northeastern State University's Seminary Hall shine with lights.

The annual Lights On ceremony is Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. in front of Seminary Hall. This year the event is held in conjunction with the lighting ceremony at the courthouse in Cherokee Square at 5 p.m. The lighting events are being held cooperatively as part of the "Tahlequah City of Firsts" campaign to create a city-wide event.

The Seminary Hall ceremony is hosted by Tahlequah mayor Ken Purdy and NSU first lady Susanne Betz.

Entertainment will be provided by the River City Players, Tahlequah Ballet Company, the Greenwood, Cherokee and Sequoyah elementary choirs and the Tahlequah High School Show Choir. Children can have a free picture taken with Santa upon his arrival at the close of the ceremony.

Lights On is a great tradition at NSU where we have the opportunity to celebrate with the community on our campus and kick off the Christmas season, said Robyn Pursley, coordinator of theatre and organizer of the event. We directly involve students from Tahlequah Public Schools as well as local performing arts groups to provide a short evening of Christmas-themed entertainment.

Mrs. Claus will read 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and the Santa's elves will also attend. Children can choose an ornament from Santa's tree and a treat bag from Santa's stocking. Children can also personally deliver their Christmas letters to Santa's mail elf.

It is wonderful to see representatives of NSU and the city engage in a joint effort to begin our holiday season, said Pursley. I am proud to be coordinating this event within the long line of efforts on the part of NSU to reach out and collaborate with the Tahlequah community.

Parents are encouraged to bring their own camera to take a picture of their children with Santa. A limited quantity of instant pictures are available for those without a camera.

The Lights On Seminary Hall ceremony is followed a few days later by the Tahlequah Christmas Parade of Lights.

The parade starts at 7 p.m. on Dec. 10. Schools, churches, businesses and other groups will display floats on the route from NSU through downtown on Muskogee Avenue. This year's theme is "A Stars and Stripes Christmas."
