TAHLEQUAH - Leadership and volunteerism have always come naturally to Northeastern
State University seniors Breanna Walker and Cody Brumley. Now, through their appointment
as Senator Herb Rozell Scholars, each is being rewarded for their leadership and service efforts.
Established to honor the outstanding works and deeds of former Senator Herb Rozell
who dedicated 28 years of public service to the people of District 3 and the state
of Oklahoma, the Senator Herb Rozell Scholars Program recognizes NSU seniors with
tremendous campus and community leadership, outstanding scholastic achievement, and
commitment to excellence for the future. Funded by private donations to the NSU Foundation,
the scholarship pays for each recipient's expenses for the following year, freeing
them to explore additional opportunities for service and leadership.
"The name Rozell represents so much to our University and this community. I am honored
to represent our University as a Rozell Scholar. I hope to fulfill the aims of this
prestigious scholarship and develop the scholarship to even higher expectations for
the generations to follow, " Walker said.
A President's Leadership Class (PLC) member and its former vice-president, Walker
maintains involvement in several student activity organizations including serving
as a small group leader for Redmen Ambassadors and as a George Nigh Scholar. In addition
to her volunteer work as a BCM Ensemble Leader and on the Worship Committee, she has
been the president of the Pre-Professional Health Club. A cellular biology major,
Walker hopes to attend medical school and eventually serve overseas as a medical missionary.
"Leadership is not about position, power, or prestige. It is about doing your part
to meet a need. It is about being a servant, " said Brumley when asked what drives
him to be a leader. "To be labeled as a leader by both faculty and my peers is an
honor. "
A Mass Communication major, Brumley enjoys an active scholarly and student life at
Northeastern. In addition to serving as the president for the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity,
Brumley was named 2005's Mr. NSU. He has also served as president of the BCM and was
named Greek Male of the Year. Anticipating graduation in the spring of 2007, Brumley,
a PLC student, looks forward to both his senior year and life after graduation. His
future plans include attending Baptist theological seminary in Kansas City, Missouri.
